division of OSL Engineering to develop new ‘rapid response’
and pelleting and animal feed units at its Rotherham plant.

Alan takes the crease |

 | Alan Wood, of Woodseats, Sheffield, recently
joined Newburgh as head of procurement. He
previously worked in a similar position for 28
years for Dormer Tools of Worksop, and
brings his experience to Newburgh’s fastexpanding
operation. Alan told Discover: “I
found the Newburgh staff very friendly and
welcoming, and I look forward to helping
them develop the new Rotherham factory to
the full.” Alan, who is married with two
grown-up children, was a keen cricketer for
Aston Hall Cricket Club in Sheffield before an
accident limited his appearances, he now
enjoys a round of golf.

Street Pride |

 | A roundabout on the approach to
Newburgh’s headquarters on Bessemer Way,
Rotherham, has been sponsored by the
company in a bid to improve the town’s
environment.
The initiative is part of the borough council’s
Rotherham Street Pride campaign, and will
involve signing and the landscaping of the
roundabout, which features a sculpture
epitomising the town’s resurgence from the
industrial dereliction of the recent past.
Newburgh’s marketing chief Matthew Jewitt
commented: “We felt it was important to
contribute something to the council’s highly
laudible bid to improve the environment. And
as one of the new companies which have
recently moved in to Rotherham, we wanted
to make our mark on the landscape.”

High-level visit |

 | Liberal Democrat peer Baroness Angela Harris
of Richmond made a flying visit to Newburgh
Engineering of Rotherham recently.
Baroness Harris is a patron of Northern
Defence Industries (NDI), a strategic alliance
of about 200 northern companies which
enables members to develop their business in
global defence and aerospace. Newburgh
managing director Vince Middleton is an NDI
board member.
Newburgh’s Marketing Manager, Matthew
Jewitt, explained: “NDI capitalises on the
north’s position as an engineering centre of
excellence, and we were delighted to
welcome Baroness Harris to look around our
plant. It confirms the company’s status as a
leading player in contract manufacturing.”

 | Newburgh will be
exhibiting at Offshore Europe 2007 – the largest oil
and gas exhibition in the world outside North
America – to be held in Aberdeen from September
4-7. The exhibition at the Aberdeen Exhibition and
Conference Centre features over 1,500 companies
and the last event in 2005 attracted over 32,000
visitors from 108 countries. Marketing chief Matt
Jewitt commented: “Offshore Europe is now
established as a global forum and a ‘must attend’
event for anyone in the oil and gas business. We look
forward to meeting many of our existing and
potential new customers there.”

| Chairman gets on his bike: Tony Middleton, chairman of Newburgh, is about to set off on a marathon 3,800 motorbike ride across Europe to raise money for UNICEF and the children affected by the Chernobyl disaster. “The aim is to raise £20,000 for the children,” explained Tony, who will be riding his BMW R1200 GS from Britain to Kiev in the Urkraine.  | An era passed when
machinist Terry Armitt left Newburgh after
a lifetime working for the company. When
Terry, of Springfield Road, Bradwell, joined
the company 48 years ago in 1957, the
founder Mr Isaac Middleton, was still in
post, and all the machines were manually
operated. When he left in July, the company
was at the forefront of computerised
precision engineering operations. “But the
company has never lost the family spirit,”
said Terry, who intends to spend time in his
retirement on his hobby of breeding prizewinning
budgerigars.

at the prestigious Farnborough Air Show
again this year, sharing a stand with the
North West Aerospace Alliance. The show
featured 1,480 companies from 35
countries, and there were 100 aircraft on
display. Organisers estimate that more than
140,000 people attended over the weeklong
show in July.
